Karwa Chauth is an annual one-day festival. Its honors the Hindu god Shiva and goddess Parvati. The Karwa Chauth is celebrate in October Month. It occurs on the fourth day in Kartik when the full moon in the Hindu month.

 

Karva Chauth Significance / Importance of Karva Chauth

The word Karva Chauth is from two words, ‘Karva,’ which means an earthen pot with a spout and ‘Chauth’ means fourth. The earthen pot is of great significance in India. The pot is use by the women to offer water to the moon as part of the festival rituals. The belief of this festival is that women praying for the safe return of their husbands. The Karva Chauth celebration is the sign the end of the harvest season. The festival offers an occasion to strengthen familialties.

Karva Chauth is celebrated annually by all the married Indian Hindu women. Indian women execute fast from sunrise to moonrise. On Karwa Chauth womens pray for the longevity, well-being of their husbands. The festival is also fasting by unmarried women. They pray in the hope of securing a desired life partner. It falls on the fourth day of the dark fortnight in the month of Kartik of the Hindu lunar calendar. The Karva Chauth comes in the Krishna paksh or the waning phase of the moon. The date of karwa chauth is mainly falls any day between mid to late October. It is celebrated in the Northern states of India – Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh Himachal Pradesh, and Rajasthan.

About Karaka Chaturthi (Karva Chauth)

Karwa Chauth fasting is done during Krishna Paksha Chaturthi in the Hindu month of Kartik. In Amanta calendar is followed in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Southern India it is Ashwin month which is current during Karwa Chauth.

Compare to South Indian states, Karwa Chauth is more popular in North Indian states. After four days of Karwa Chauth, Ahoi Ashtami Vrat is observed for the wellbeing of sons.

  3. Another such story behind the Karwa Chauth is of Veervati, the sister of seven loving brothers.

The seven brothers could not bear to see her fasting the whole day without eating and without the drop of water. So they decided to mislead her into believing that the sun had risen. Veervati broke her fast and hard food and drink water. But soon she got the news of her husband’s death. She prayed for a whole year for his husband’s life. The Gods blissful with her devotion gave back her husband’s life.

Karva Chauth in Punjab

Much like its neighbouring states, festivities related to . On Karva Chauth day start with early in the morning. All married women wake up before the sun rises and get ready. On Karva Chauth day, the woman’s mother sends Bayaa. In Bayaa having coconut, sweet, fruits and sindoor (vermillion) and clothes for her daughter and gifts for the mother-in-law. The daughter-in-law is to eat the Sargi given to her by her mother-in-law. Sargi a food which is consumed before sunrise on the day of Karva Chauth. It includes fresh fruits, dry fruits, chapatis, sweets, and fresh vegetables or salads.

At afternoon Indian women come together with their particular thalis or with a large plate. The Thali includes fruits, dry fruits, a diya or lamp, a glass of kachi lassi, coconut, sweet mathri, and gifts which will be given to the mother-in-law. The thali is always decorate or cover by a cloth. The many of women come together and sit circling the Goddess Parvati (idol of Gaura Maa). The story of Karva Chauth is narrated by Elderly woman. Elderly Woman ascertain the pooja is performed in the correct manner. The pooja is starting by rotate the thalis around the circle. This is called thali batana. This ritual is Comply with seven times. When women doing ritual then they sing the song.

The song take the precautions while women observe the fast. After completing the pooja the women touch the feet of their mothers-in-law and give those gifts with dry fruits as a symbol of respect. After the moon shines bright in the dark sky then the fast break. They carry a Channi (sieve) and a pooja thali. Which include of a diya which is made of wheat flour, sweets and a glass of water. All Women go to a place where the moon is clearly visible on terrace. They look at the moon through the sieve and offer kachi lassi to the moon and reading prayer in mind for their husband.

The husband feeds the same kachi lassi and sweets to the wife. She touches the feet of her husband. Both husband and wife take blessings from their elderly in the house and then fast is broken. Then the older women bless the younger ones with words such as ‘Akhand Saubhagyavati bhav’ or ‘sada suhagan raho,’ both of which mean ‘may you be a married woman all your life.’The Punjabis on the day of Karva Chauth includes in Dinner of any Sabut dal- Red beans, green pulses, pooris (fried Indian flatbread), rice and sweets from the Bayaa.

 

Karva Chauth in Uttar Pradesh

Karva Chauth starts early wake up in the morning. In Uttar Pradesh, Sargi includes vermicelli or feni. In Sargi a plate full of sweets and savories, coconut, dry fruits, fara which is steamed lentil dumplings and gifts. The most important items for the Hindu woman. These include toe rings, anklets, vermillion, bindi/tika glass bangles, Mehndi and alta (red paint which is apply on feet).
