Chhath puja Story

Chhath puja is dedicated to the Sun God (Lord Surya) and Chhathi Maiya (name of Goddess Usha and a known sister to Lord Surya). The festival is called ‘Chhath’ because it represents the number 6 in Hindi or also in Nepali.

Chhath Puja is a Hindu festival dedicated to the worship of the Sun God (Surya Dev) and Chhathi Maiya (known as Usha in the Vedas), who is believed to be the consort of the Sun God. This festival is predominantly celebrated in the Indian states of Bihar, Jharkhand, eastern Uttar Pradesh, and some parts of Nepal.

When is Chhath Puja in 2023 

Chhath Puja is a four day festival as per Hindu calendar. It is dedicated to Lord Surya and Chhathi Maiya. This year 2023, the chhath begins with Nahay Khay on November 8 Monday. Chhath pooja ends with Usha Arghya on Thursday, November 11, 2023. According to Hindu calendar the Chhath puja falls every year in October or November month. The prosperous day starts after the sixth day of Diwali. Chatth starts in the Kartik month of sixth day. Usha Arghya (Chath) is a 36-hour nirjala festival and offering arghya during sunrise.

 

Celebrating the Chhath Puja

Chhath Puja is mostly celebrated in Bihar, Jharkhand, and Eastern Uttar Pradesh. November 11 with Usha Arghya the vratis keeping fast will break the fast after 36 hours of ‘nirjala’ (without taking water) fasting.

The preparation for Chhath Puja stats from a day after Diwali. All the vratis start eating only Satvik food. The satwik food is prepare without onion and garlic. The food is prepare with hygiene and eat only after taking a bath.

On Nahay Khay vrat is start their day by cleaning every corner and nook of their house. After cleaning the house area, the applying orange vermillion, preparations for making the Prasad starts. All the ingredients used in cooking like vegetables, pulses, rice are freshly bought with clean hands. It should not mixed with food items that have been previously used. It never be touched with unclean hands.

For making prasad the Rock salt is always use. The food is prepare without onion and garlic with clean hands. Actually the food is Satwik.

Chhath Puja usually takes place six days after Diwali, in the month of October or November. It is a four-day festival marked by various rituals and customs, and it is known for its rigorous fasting and austerities.

Chhath Puja holds significant cultural, religious, and environmental importance, especially in the regions of Bihar, Jharkhand, eastern Uttar Pradesh, and parts of Nepal. Here are some key aspects of the importance of Chhath Puja:

Celebration of  4 days of Chhath Puja

Nahay Khay (1st Day) – On first day devotees take a dip in a holy water body. They fasting whole day. The Ladies execute the fast can have 1 meal in the whole day. The meal has to be home cooked clean and fresh.

Lohanda and Kharna (2nd Day) – On the second day fast has to be preserve whole day. Fast is broken after sunset. After sunset fast is broken with prasad – Kheer and Chapati. After this another fast has to be observe for the next 36 hours without water.

Sandhya Arghya (3rd Day) – On third day, the process of preparing of prasad is organize at home. Prashad is taken to the river in the evening for offering to the setting sun. Women wear yellow turmeric colour sarees while performing this ritual.

Usha Arghya (4th Day) – On the last day of the festival, devotees make offerings prasad to the rising sun at the riverbank. After this the devotees break their fast of 36-hours. It resulting in the end of the festival.

 

Chhath Puja Prasad Significance and History of Chhath Puja

The food is firstly offering it to Sun god and Chatthi Maiya. This festival is the significance of Prasad. The prasad is prepare from rice, fresh fruits, dry fruits, wheat, nuts, jaggery, coconuts, and ghee. The Thekua is a popular dish or cookie which is made from the wheat flour. Prasad is first consumed by the person who’s keeping the fast. The prashad is distribute all around the area, neighbors, and relatives and in the family.

On the second day is Kharna day knowing as Chhath. On the second day vratis do fasting. Fating rule is very complicated nirjal vrat. The rule is not to eat anything or even drink water until puja. When prasad of kheer is made with gud and arwa chawal, the pooja is organize in the evening. The chatth fast is of 36-hour. The vratis fasting Chhath Puja with arghya at sunrise till the end.

Chhath Puja is consider to be an ancient festival. It is also mention in Rig Veda texts. In the Rig Veda texts in ancient times, the Draupadi and the Pandavas of Hastinapur is to celebrate Chhath.
